Canon announced its new ultra high resolution full frame cameras today. There are two variants, one with a low pass filter (5DS) and one with a cancellation low pass filter (5DS R). Unlike the D810 which has no low pass filter, the 5DS R has adopted to use a cancellation low pass filter instead, which means there is still a low pass filter in the camera, but its effect is reversed by the presence of a cancellation filter. Canon has adopted this approach because it is more efficient and cost effective way to produce two variants of 5DS without significantly changing the internal design. The cost of the 5DS as predicted will cost about $1,000 more than the 5D III ($3999). The cost of the 5DS R is surprisingly only $200 more than the 5DS.
