Nikon has just announced its new 16-80mm f/2.8-4 ED VR. It is the world’s lightest wide angle to mid telephoto lens with an f/2.8-4 aperture. Compare to the current 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6, the new 16-80mm is a third to one stop faster while Nikon is able to keep this lens to about the same size as the 16-85mm, that’s pretty impressive. On a DX-format camera, 16-80mm zoom range is equivalent to Nikon’s 24-120mm FX lens (35mm format). The AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR features Crystal Coat virtually eliminates glare, while Extra-low Dispersion Glass and Aspherical elements reduce colour aberration and enhance sharpness and contrast. In low light situations, the 16-80mm provides up to four stops of  vibration reduction so you can be sure to shoot in the most difficult situation handheld. There’s even a specialized tripod VR mode that eliminates the effects of tripod vibration. With a fast f/2.8-4 aperture, VR image stabilization and superb glass quality, it is a great light weight wide-angle to portrait lens. At its widest focal length, the lens is a third of a stop faster than most kit lens while it is a full stop faster at the telephoto end.

You can pre-order the Nikon AF-S 16-80mm f/2.8-4 ED VR at B&H or Adorama

Primary AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR features:

  • Equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) mechanism that effectively compensates for camera shake (camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop*2 increase in shutter speed)
  • Adoption of Nano Crystal Coat, aspherical lens elements and ED glass elements for superior optical performance with which chromatic aberration and ghost are suppressed
  • Equipped with an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism that achieves stable auto-exposure with high-speed continuous shooting
  • Adoption of Nikon’s exclusive and highly durable fluorine coat, which effectively repels water and oils, and makes cleaning the lens easier even when it does get dirty, on the outer surfaces of the extreme front and rear lens elements
