Canon’s 700 series DSLR line up has just got some serious updates with not one but two new models – EOS 750D and EOS 760D. Both cameras use the same 24.2MP APS-C sensor which is an attractive addition because Canon has been using the same 18MP sensor since 550D. The auto focus points has increased from 9 to 19 points (with phase detection). It uses a new Hybrid CMOS AF III system with sensor-based phase detection for improved live view focusing. The metering system has also been upgraded using a new 7560 pixel RGB + IR metering zone for more accurate metering. The ISO range remained the same at 100-12800 (expandable 25600), but it is expected the noise control will be slightly better. Other advancements come in the form of built-in Wi-Fi with NFC – a first in the EOS DSLRs range – and Flicker detection, first seen in the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, which also makes its way into both models.

Between the two cameras, the differences are mainly in the ergonomic design of the camera rather than specification. The 760D has a top panel LCD for a quick look at settings along with a rear panel command dial similar to the 70D, while the 750D is more inline with its predecessor 700D. The price difference between the two models is about $100USD (body only). But if you are ordering kit, there is no 18-55m kit with the 760D at the moment so you are stuck with the 18-135mm kit which cost $200 more as a kit.

With the new 760D, you are getting a camera that is very close to the 70D (both ergonomic and specs) for a much lower cost.  I would definitely recommend the 760D if you can afford the extra $100 and if these features worth the extra $100 to you.

  • Servo AF in live view, which lets you track moving subjects in live view
  • Eye sensor for use with optical viewfinder
  • LCD information display on top plate
  • Quick control dial on rear

For those that are currently using 650D/700D, the 750D and 760D’s new sensor, AF system, metering system, built in Wifi  are all worth upgrading to.
