The battle of high mega pixel cameras is back.  Up until now Nikon has been leading with high mega pixel cameras in the full frame category with its D800E and D810. Both cameras host a whopping 36MP FX CMOS sensor. That is until now where Canon is expecting to announce its counterpart – Canon EOS 5Ds. It is expected to have a higher resolution of 50MP. There will be two versions of it, one with the low pass filter and one without. I don’t believe having  two variants of the 5Ds is a good move. Even Nikon has discarded this approach and only have one type of D810 now. Back then, it was a wise move for Nikon to introduce two variants of D800 and D800E to test the market, perhaps Canon wants to test it again on their side.

With such high mega pixel count, there is a draw back on high ISO performance. I expect the 5Ds to have an ISO performance just like the 5D III. It will have a better algorithm and processor for ISO noise but off set by the higher resolution. The fact that its native ISO range is only 100-6400 explains it is not going to have a super ISO performance. It has a frame rate of 5 fps which is the same as the Nikon D810. It would be hard to go any higher with such a high MP count. It is  expected  to adopt most features you see in the 7D II (review here), include DIGIC 6 processors, 61AF focusing system, 150K RGB + IR photometry sensor and improved weather sealing. The 50MP 5Ds will make the 36MP Nikon D810 feel less impressive. For those that are using Nikon D810, the new 5Ds is probably not going to affect you much since 36MP is still tremendous, it is just to bring Canon back in the game. The 5Ds is targeted for commercial photographers and studio photographers and will probably cost  in the range of $4000. For those who do not need 50MP, you are better off to wait for the 5D IV which will have a faster fps and better ISO performance.
