Fujifilm X cameras like the X-Pro 1, X-T1, X-E2 have been competing with some of the bigger guns like Nikon D7100 and Canon 70D. Their functionality and performance have reached so far that they are as good as any APS-C DSLRs. I am currently using the Fujifilm X-E2 as my leisure camera and it goes to everywhere with me. Not only its size is unbeatable, it looks amazingly beautiful. The ability to use other exotic lenses on it makes it a very fun camera to use too.  Check out my other posts on the good things about mirrorless cameras.

Previously I wrote about my shooting experience with the X-E2 when I took it to a photoshoot. It was pretty amazing how such a small camera can produce such stunning image quality. I was very impressed, so I arranged another opportunity to take the X-E2 to another photoshoot again. This time I wanted to see how it compete with a professional DSLR (in this case it was the Canon 5D3). I took some images with both cameras, nothing technical (no pixel peeking , chart test or high ISO test), it was simply shooting for what I need and see how the images turn out.  I was shooting with flash, so the EVF on the X-E2 didn’t have any advantages. The focus speed was won hands down by the Canon 5D3 but the X-E2 was not too bad either. Luckily it wasn’t too underexpose (pre flash) for the EVF to focus. The smaller and lighter X-E2 did have an advantage when I need to get low to the ground.

I took a couple of images – one with Canon 5D3 and one with X-E2. The lenses used were different so there is a slight variation with the focal length and angle. But looking at the two images there isn’t much difference, I couldn’t tell one is better than the other.  Having said that, the Canon 5D3 would certainly shine in situation where high ISO or fast AF tracking is needed. But for this test, this is the result. The X-E2 performs pretty similar to the Canon 5D3 and it is smaller and cheaper.

Do you know which image is from the X-E2 and 5D3? Leave us a comment below.

Here are a couple more samples from the Fujifilm X-E2.
