When it comes to choosing a lens for portrait, the 85mm f/1.4, 105mm f/2, 135mm f/2 and 70-200mm f/2.8 would get most of the votes. There is no doubt that these are stunning portrait lenses. The ability to isolate your subject and the creamy bokeh that they produce are absolutely unbeatable. They would be my go to lenses for any portrait work. However, when use properly wide angle lenses are also good portrait lenses, being wide angle they can capture those stunning background to create art like portraits.
The Nikon 24mm f/1.4 is my new favourite portrait lens (more on this lens here and here). It is a light weight wide angle with an open wide aperture of f/1.4. Sometimes I have it on the D3000 (read on) as my travel kit. I love shooting with this lens because it is a specialise lens for isolating your subject even at wide angle. It also makes a good travel lens because this lens will cover most of the occasions except for the missing tele-zoom which doesn’t worry me much for travel.
The lens is travel friendly due to its light weight. It has a decent minimum focusing distance so you can take close up photos e.g. photos of the local delicacies. The lens also covers for low light condition, turning night into day with an open wide aperture of f/1.4. Not to mention it is now one of my favourite portrait lens, especially for travel portraits where including a bit of background scenery can emphasis your travel adventure.
Sounds good so far? You can pick a new Nikon 24mm f/1.4 up at B&H Video.
As you know I am currently travelling and will be heading to Hong Kong tomorrow. At the moment, I am in Macau; stunned by the beautiful lights in this “Eastern Las Vegas” city.
During my stay here I took some portraits using the Nikon 24mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 (more on the 85mm next post). Here are some of the images taken with the Nikon 24mm f/1.4. Enjoy.
